Memories

Most of my pictures are ‘documentary/memento’ images. This is a collection of all my favorite memories and pictures. Most are pictures I’ve taken. A few have been scavenged from family, friends, and other sources. They’ve all been selected from the 3,200-plus posts and over 7,700 pictures on Breakfast in America.

Jim

Jim — Jim needed a new portrait to accompany his latest gallery exhibits. I would have preferred to take his picture in the workshop, but time was of the essence, and Jim and Carol were in Springfield for the day. I used my secret weapon—Ginger—to distract and relax his pose while I took a set of photographs in our backyard. 2

Lanie, April 2026

Making plans — I grabbed this candid shot of Lanie while we were taking a rest in the shade outside the butterfly house at the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks. Unfortunately, the butterfly house was closed for renovation.

Making plans

Making plans — Lanie and her bf Lewis joined us for our 'mini-break.' We took a few minutes before we left the hotel to decide what to do with our day. 2

Well plaid

Well plaid — When we arrived at the hotel on Sunday, I knew I wanted to get this picture. Monday, I grabbed it. I had to lie down in the road to get the picture, but it was worth it. Graduate Hotel, Fayetteville, Arkansas, April 2026. 2

Meds

Meds — It seems that the older I get, the more meds and supplements it takes to keep me functioning.

Orange cat and spot

Orange cat and spot — Of course a visit to see Katie also means a chance to see Dick, our grandcat in his native environment and with a nice midcentury modern style rug too.

Empty Chair

Empty Chair — I'd planned on taking a picture of Ginger sitting enjoying the view, which would have been a great silhouette. But Ginger got up as I grabbed my phone.

The sudden shock of being confronted with the expanse of the plains

The sudden shock of being confronted with the expanse of the plains — I saw this picture — well, one like it — while driving north on Day 3 and made a note to take a picture on the return trip, except I couldn't find the exact viewpoint I'd found, which is a shame because it was a much better composition. Oh well, this photograph will have to do.

The endless play of light

The endless play of light — I stayed here for several minutes watching the ever-changing light move across Chalk Creek Canyon. 2

Chalk Creek Canyon

Chalk Creek Canyon — I couldn't resist taking a picture of Chalk Creek Canyon framed by this tree and bush. It was windy and the light was changing rapidly as the clouds moved across the sky.

Turnaround Point, and stopped for lunch

Turnaround Point, and stopped for lunch — According to my calculations, I was about three-and-a-half miles into my hike, and this log offered a great view and spot to eat lunch.

Independence Pass and Continental Divide

Independence Pass and Continental Divide — It was a lot busier than I expected given the tortuous drive to get here. Day 3 - Road Trip October 2025.

When did I grow old?

When did I grow old? It feels like I blinked, and suddenly I’ve aged — I was writing in my journal when I noticed how old my hands looked. I don’t feel older, but I now have my grandparents’ hands: the loose flesh, thin skin, age spots, and prominent veins.

Whites Creek on the Whites Creek Trail South Loop

Whites Creek on the Whites Creek Trail South Loop — The trail at the bottom of the descent down to Whites Creek had been washed out, and parts of the trail were knee-deep in water. Nothing unexpected after all the rain we have had.

Little Brazil Creek is very ‘scrubby’

Little Brazil Creek is very 'scrubby' — Looking north. I'm filling up with water for tonight and tomorrow. I've yet to find a good camping spot near this creek. I hiked over ten miles today to get here.
