Gary at the Eleven Point River Scenic Overlook, Irish Wilderness, December 2024.

Gary at the Camp Five Pond Trailhead, Irish Wilderness — It’s late in the day (14:30), and I’m carrying 4 liters of water. I want to get around four miles in and camp set up before it gets dark, in about three hours.

It’s a two-and-a-half-hour drive to Irish Wilderness from Springfield.

Keeping my feet warm at 26°F — A change of plan, I decided to hike the five or six miles back to the trailhead and go home. I ought to be able to finish the trip before it gets dark.

Wrapped up warm for a cold hike — I’m going off in search of a trail that I’m sure runs from where I’m camped near Little Paddy Creek to the North Loop. Then I plan to look for a better campsite at ‘Spring Hollow’.

Ocean City Beach. Maryland.

Ginger dips her toes in the Atlantic Ocean. Lily Beach, Delaware.

A change of plan — Here I am enjoying the sunset and beer on the deck at the cottage.

Lanie — Just Lanie being herself. Walk by the creek.

Gary at Piney Creek Wilderness — I spent most of my time sitting and watching the lake and trees, with the occasional swim to cool down, which was exactly what I wanted to do.

Back at my Lakeside Retreat — Time for five days R&R by Table Rock Lake. +2

Flickr meet-up — We first met Jacqi in person in 2008 at Bletchley Park in the UK. Then again in Springfield, Missouri as she traveled to her new home in New Zealand in 2011.

Room with a sea view — We opted for a room with a sea view, for a day spent catching up on work. Watching the changes in the weather and enjoying the view up and down the coast was, as they say in the ads, priceless. Best Western Clifton Hotel, Folkestone.

Ginger testing the water at St. Leonards-on-Sea — We have a few days to explore and this is where we ended up on the first day. Five-minute read.

What Gare Bears might wear in the woods — With the emphasis on might. Well actually, might not. We had a good laugh though.

Ginger, Gary and the Spinnaker Tower — Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth.

Ginger watching the dawn at 30,000 feet. We are off on the first leg of a visit to the UK. Our first since 2019.

Another Hat — I bought myself something with a large brim that was also lightweight and airy for the summer.

It’s that trail cairn again — By one-thirty I had camp squared away, and I started an uneventful hike back to the trailhead. +2

Jus’ Chilling — The six-mile hike back to the trailhead should only take three to four hours (depending on if I stop for lunch), so I can sit back, take it easy, and enjoy the forest for a while. +1
