Welcome to Breakfast in America

I’m a Brit who unexpectedly emigrated to the USA in 2008, and this is my photo journal.

It’s an eclectic mix of things; there’s no guiding theme or topic. It is whatever catches my attention, what I’ve been thinking, doing, or piques my interest. Currently that’s mainly backpacking and clearing some of the backlog on my ‘honey-do’ list.

Memories

A dozen pictures, picked at random from my favorite memories. You can see my portfolio here.

The Devil’s Backbone

The Devil’s Backbone – It’s impressively narrow with a 160′ drop off on either side. 3

To all appearances, we might still be flying

To all appearances, we might still be flying — Good flights, an excellent connection, and we zipped through border control in the UK in minutes. Down in Baggage Reclaim our bags were first on the carousel, and our hotel was just a short (inside) walk from Heathrow T3 Arrivals.
Little Mermaid After Show Pictures

The Little Mermaid – Springfield Little Theater

Just before the beginning of term, with no warning or preparation, Lanie decided to audition for The Little Mermaid at Springfield Little Theater. Against some pretty stiff competition she was selected and to her credit has stuck with it with good humor through a rigorous rehearsal and show schedule. 14 pictures

The Baptism of Persephone

The Baptism of Persephone – I’ve often said that working for the Church I am privileged to be present at key moments in people’s lives. Unexpectedly that happened at this weekend’s Easter Vigil service. 2 2

The ‘doors’ on my bad weather tarp help keep the weather out and the warmth in. I could have set the tarp closer to the ground, but I prefer more standing room.

    Day Two

Hammock camping in the snow. 7:20 a.m. and it’s been snowing for around nine hours. I was nice and cozy in my hammock. Copyright © 2025 Gary Allman, all rights reserved.

  • Creek and spring in ‘Deep Hollow’

There was water in ‘Deep Hollow’ creek — time to top up my water before it gets dark, and the storm arrives. Copyright © 2025 Gary Allman, all rights reserved.

I arrived at my campsite above ‘Deep Hollow’ just after three. The ice had slowed me down considerably. Once I passed the Devil’s Den junction, I studied the trail as I went along, trying to determine what clues might be visible when the trail became covered in snow.

I thought the gap in the grasses left by the trail might be evident if the snow did not flatten them. I also tried to commit some landmarks to memory.
