Welcome to Breakfast in America

I’m a Brit who unexpectedly emigrated to the USA in 2008, and this is my photo journal.

It’s an eclectic mix of things; there’s no guiding theme or topic. It is whatever catches my attention, what I’ve been thinking, doing, or piques my interest. Currently that’s mainly backpacking and clearing some of the backlog on my ‘honey-do’ list.

Memories

A dozen pictures, picked at random from my favorite memories. You can see my portfolio here.

Little Mermaid After Show Pictures

The Little Mermaid – Springfield Little Theater

Just before the beginning of term, with no warning or preparation, Lanie decided to audition for The Little Mermaid at Springfield Little Theater. Against some pretty stiff competition she was selected and to her credit has stuck with it with good humor through a rigorous rehearsal and show schedule. 14 pictures

Rumpled

Rumpled — I loved the play of light, how the duvet mimics the shapes of two people lying back-to-back, and the stories implicit in the folds and wrinkles of the duvet and sheet.

Breakfast in America

Breakfast in America — Our first Breakfast. We got up early to get breakfast before church. It was my first opportunity to sample ‘Biscuits and Gravy’ and take my own special picture of Ginger. Aunt Martha’s Pankake House, Springfield, Missouri.

A fleeting burst of sunshine

A fleeting burst of sunshine. Right place, right time. A lucky shot as the sun shone for just a minute.

And, as is appropriate, heading south, the trail starts with a crossing of Chalk Creek. The complete segment is 20 miles. I’m only going three or four miles and then turning around to come back. However, this includes a 900+ foot climb, it’s going to be the most elevation gain I’ve ever done in a single climb and starting out at 8,700 feet or so too. Hopefully my altitude acclimatization and hiking build-up plan will pay off today.

The final leg of my hike back to my campsite. As it was still early, I then drove to St. Elmo, a Ghost town ten or so miles away. The unpaved roads were in the process of being regraded, and they’d been dumping and wetting topsoil on the road, making it sticky, slippery, and muddy.

With my short road hike and excursion up a brief bit of Section 14 of the Colorado Trail, I managed six and a half miles for my second hike.
