Outdoor Activities

Time spent in the great outdoors hiking, backpacking, camping, fishing, paddling, and shooting. Anything well away from the madding crowd.

Vacation Day 12 – We hired a sailboat in the vain hope of getting in some sailing. x4

Photograph of a Glock 17 Semiautomatic 9mm handgun.

Glock 17 – Another good thing about having visitors from the UK is that I can ask my friends if I can borrow their handguns to take down the range. 2 pictures

Photograph of a Beretta 92FS, Hammer cocked, safety off.

Beretta 92FS- Compared to the Glock the Beretta just screams finish and quality. 2

Barefoot in the snow

Quick winter hiking clothing test – With temperatures down to 18°F (-8°C) and six-seven inches of snow on the ground, I thought it would be a good opportunity to check how my hiking clothing fared. 2 pictures

Saturday night youth lock-out followed by a Sunday morning service and picnic at Camp Shawio. 32 pictures

I attended an ‘Active Shooter’ training session at church a couple of days ago, I think this should be filed under ‘Things I didn’t expect to learn/discuss at church’.

Another day’s sailing on my friend John’s sailboat – only this time instead of too much wind, we had too little. 5 pictures

Lanie in an Ascend D10 Kayak on the Jame River, Springfield Missouri

A Late Afternoon Paddle on the James River with Lanie – Lanie had a break in her rehearsal schedule, so I thought I’d take her kayaking to get her out and about for a while. One-minute read, 5 pictures

Spent the day with cap’n John getting the boat ready for some real sailing – he has a mainsail. Unfortunately, the ‘iron Topsail’ is currently broken, and beyond my knowledge to repair.

I really like this series of pictures of John I took while we out sailing yesterday. 3 pictures

I’ve had a long outstanding arrangement to take Jonathan out in one of our kayaks. Last week we agreed some mutually convenient times, and today we finally got out on the water. 8 pictures

Remember cap’n John? Well, he’s gone and done it now and bought himself a twenty-seven-foot sailboat. I went with him to Stockton to take a look. Pretty cool she is too. 19 pictures

Sailing with John on Stockton Lake -When my friend John said he wanted a sailing buddy to help him out on his first day sail in a keelboat without an instructor I jumped at the chance. Video: 1 minute. Five-minute read and 15 pictures

Old man’s beard on the trees at the edge of the bluff

Every so often the knot under the sole between my toes breaks off. When it does I have to stop and tie a new one.

Ginger spotted this picture which worked very well. We probably should’ve put more water in the Platy.

A picture from last weekend’s backpacking trip. We were checking out a stock pond to see if it might provide drinking water. The pond was not only quite large, but also surrounded by cattails which had started to break apart and seed.

We spent a long weekend backpacking in Hercules Glades. The highlight being an afternoon resting and enjoying the spring sunshine on top of a 260 ft. bluff overlooking Beaver Creek. Journal: 1 29

I’ll be writing more in a few days. For now, we camped at the top of this 260ft. bluff last night. It took a bit of bush-whacking to get there but it was worth it. | Read about our trip

This time last year we were backpacking with Lanie at Piney Creek Wilderness and doing other exciting things!

It was when we saw this view that we realized how far up the mountain we’d driven last night – Spring Break 2013 – Day 2 – The view from Cheaha Mountain State Park, Alabama. 3 pictures
