At Home

Pictures taken in the places I’ve called ‘home’ over the years.

Will it work? Dry fit. Just eyeballing it to make sure we like the use of space, and checking I hadn’t messed up my size calculations.

Boxes — I was going to custom build the Sparkle Zone Storage Center, but we realized we could save a lot of time (but not $$$ — the doors alone were nearly $700) by bringing in ready-made units.

An empty wall equals storage potential. Recently we’ve been on the lookout for more storage space. We have also been looking for somewhere with space, that we can use for small product photography. The south facing windows of the ‘Sparkle Zone’ offer good light and, we realized, space for storage of our photography gear — and more.

I finally found a use for one of the few small rock samples I have collected over the years. I also tried out some new (to me) technologies in creating this post.

Morning sunlight in the workshop. +1

Workshop Bling — I finally got around to adding some drawer pulls onto the drawers in the workshop/garage.

Rumpled — I loved the play of light, how the duvet mimics the shapes of two people lying back-to-back, and the stories implicit in the folds and wrinkles of the duvet and sheet.

Cleaning & Reorganizing — My biggest recent upgrade has been to plumb in compressed air lines so I don’t trip over the airline snaking its way across the floor. I should have done it years ago. +1

Hall Closet #2 finished — well, except the wall still needs patching and repainting.

Stained, ready for varnishing.

Workshop — mid-project. +1

Hall Closet #2 door trim added & doors fitted.

Checking — will everything fit as planned?

Measurements — It was a key requirement that this cart fitted and would pass easily through the doorway.

Backpacking gear to the rescue — Making breakfast and charging my phone while the power is out. We were lucky, we only went without power for 21 hours. +1

Hall Closet #2 — making a start. We’ve been planning to convert this space into a closet for some time now.

Nightstand. Lighter, knife, and wallet — Little quirks that may be missed when I’m no longer around. And yes, I do lay them out like this every night.

At what point does being sensible drop over the edge into being obsessional? Asking for a friend — who likes to squeeze the life out of a toothpaste tube. Sensible or an obsession?

Packing for my first backpacking trip of 2023 — The temperature is forecast to vary from the mid-twenties overnight Saturday to the mid-sixties on Monday, so it is a full winter load-out plus some spring additions. The whole lot including food, water, and fuel weighs in at around 26 lbs. +4

Photograph of a Remington Model 31, 12 Gauge shotgun manufactured in August 1931.

Remington Model 31 12 Gauge shotgun – According to the barrel date stamp, it was manufactured in August 1931, so quite early in the production run (as the serial number confirms). Some of the other markings on it suggest it might be of military origin. +2

Guilty – We are cat-sitting our ‘grandcat’ Dick for a couple of months. This was, I suspect, Dick’s way of letting me know it was well past food time.

Photograph of drilling air holes in a titanium backpacking wood burning stove.

Titanium backpacking wood stove modifications – My titanium wood stove needs a bit more air. This afternoon I added some more air holes.

Backpacking goodies in the gear closet — there must be over 100 mini Snickers bars there. I won’t be taking any on our next trip. It will be too hot, and melted Snickers are very messy. I know, I’ve tried.

Overdoing things mowing the front yard – Today the temperatures eased off slightly for the first time in many weeks. It was just low enough for me to venture out to tend to the front yard for a few hours.
