After a month’s holiday from 365 days, I’ve decided to start a second year.

I was going to be nice and tidy and start on the first of the month, but that just didn’t happen.

But here I am now, feeling ready to document what looks like it could be an interesting year with a lot of potential ups and downs, some intense excitement and lots of boredom while I sort myself out.

Note: I abandoned my second 365 days project sometime in August. The pressures of finalizing my emigration to the US, leaving work, packing up all my stuff, and maintain a long-distance relationship with Ginger were just too great. But, looking back on my pictures I saw that I probably had a lot more photos than I thought, so I decided to embark on a project to re-process and post as many pictures from the failed project as I could. This is the first picture in the series.

    Other Pictures from February 2

  • Canal Walk, Portsmouth UK

    Canal Walk, Portsmouth UK.

Originally part of the route of the Portsmouth and Arundel Canal, the railway line was built in the canal bed. The canal ran clear across Portsmouth linking Langstone harbour — and the Chichester Canal — to the dockyard.

To me, this picture has a forties/fifties feel — if you can ignore the modern lamp posts, road markings, and skyline, that is. Most likely this is down to the very slight red/blue tint I gave the picture during processing.

  • Friday Night Wine and Curry

Friday Night Curry – chicken jalfrezi by the looks of it. Copyright © 2008 Gary Allman, all rights reserved.

That’s a chicken Jalfrezi by the look of it. I’d found a very nice take-out curry place nearby in Fawcett Road. Hindsight tells me that this was going to be a good weekend for photographs, even if it did start off a bit lack-luster.

On the coffee table are a couple of photography mags and the obligatory pile of National Geographic and New Scientist magazines, both of which we’re still having delivered over ten years later. The book was a Christmas present from Jim & Carol – 1,000 places to visit in the US. I still have the CDs (on the floor in the background) and my Kef speakers too.

Ooh! I just realized I was wearing that jumper only yesterday (November 18, 2019).

What better note to end on than a raspberry?

It’s been 28 hours since I last had a proper sleep, I’ve traveled nearly 5,000 miles, and the camera battery is threatening to give up. So, this is it!

  • Decree nisei

Today the decree nisei was issued. I didn’t receive a copy until the 12th. I’m the petitioner in the divorce.

    On the 3rd January 2008

The Judge held that the respondent has behaved in such a way that the petitioner cannot reasonably be expected to live with the respondent,

    that the marriage {details removed}

    between {Gary} the Petitioner

    and {Elaine} the Respondent

has broken down irretrievably and decreed that the said marriage be dissolved unless sufficient cause be shown to the Court within six weeks from the making of this decree why such decree should not be made absolute

I was stopped twice while taking this picture. Once by some locals in a passing truck, and a few minutes later by the property’s owner. I don’t think he was convinced that I wasn’t up to any good, and he made sure we were gone.

The Police presence may be sparse out of town, but the local grapevine is obviously very effective.

  • St. Jude’s – Menaced

Photograph of St. Jude's Southsea frame by the modern 'wave' sculpture in the Palmerstone Road pedestrian precinct.

I find this sculpture rather threatening. I’m fairly sure that wasn’t the artist’s or the commissioning body’s intention.

Update: 05 October 2008. In a recent council magazine it was stated that the two identical sculptures (one at either end of the precinct) represent the breaking sea.

If I really want this to look menacing I ought to change it to a duo-tone image, the warm lighting removes a lot of the menace from the sculpture.

I saw this picture while stretching my legs this afternoon, the sun was just going down, tracking up the side of the building.

I’m trying to get back into the habit of climbing the stairs of this building twice a day. It’ll do wonders for my legs but nowt for my tummy.

I saw the potential for this picture from a long way off, and I had to move PDQ to get into a position to get any sort of decent shot. Any people in the park that were paying attention were looking in the opposite direction, at the sunset, and missed this.

This was one of those moments that no matter how over-done sunset pictures are, it just had to be taken. There’s a much better panoramic version of this picture here.

A spectacular sunset and South Parade Pier, Southsea

I’ve been going back looking for pictures I’ve accidentally missed. This is one of them, a fantastic panoramic view of a sunset and South Parade Pier in Southsea.

I remember the evening well. Despite sunsets being photographically overdone, this one could not be ignored. Considering this is five handheld photographs stitched together it’s not surprising I didn’t process it at the time. Good inexpensive software that enables this sort of image to be made is a fairly recent arrival on the scene – well for me anyway.

A collaborative picture. Ginger took her self portrait, and I added my half. Matching the tone and lighting was the main challenge.

  • EEE (Yes, that is the official designation of this building…)

    EEE

I was in a meeting in an adjacent building when I saw this picture. The only trouble is the light had changed by the time the meeting finished and the shadows of the trees were no longer on the building front panels. Oh well. Maybe I should have stopped the meeting and grabbed the shot.
