After a long walk to the shops and back via the in-laws, it was time to sit in the garden and enjoy the sun. It wasn’t long before I decided it was warm enough to disrobe.

I’ve gone to a lot of effort to make our garden secluded so that I can get an all-over tan without frightening the neighbors, and this is the first time this year I’ve been able to make full use of it. There are going to be days and days of pictures like this once the warmer weather starts.

This was one of the first pictures I took this afternoon. When I checked it earlier, I thought it was badly framed, and I took a whole load more with varying poses and framing. Now, seeing it on the computer, I really like the composition. So this is my picture of the day.

I discovered that after you’ve taken several ‘yards’ of feet pictures, as I did to take this photograph; feet start to look a bit odd. When I was a kid, I hated exposing my feet, I’d sit on the beach with my socks on. No longer. I wear shoes to work, but at all other times, except in the most extreme weather conditions, I wear nothing or sandals (without socks of course).

Another desperate last-minute picture. I leave myself so little time to take these pictures that it all gets quite a rush. I don’t know how many pictures other people take to get their daily pictures or how long they take doing it, but this is becoming a bit wearing.

Eyes (365: 23) — None of the pictures I took today really worked. Copyright © 2007 Gary Allman, all rights reserved.

None of the pictures I took today really worked, in fact they were all so poor that in an act of petulance I deleted them and emptied the recycle bin just to make sure.

There was the: driving to work shot, fridge shot, dishwasher shot and various standing about doing nowt shots.

So, this is the result of an act of desperation. If my photography wasn’t working, could I make something out of one of my pictures in Photoshop? Compared to the source shot this is positively flattering.

I’ve admired similar images; however, I suspect the models used were better.

I can’t wait for some better weather and some light in the evening, so I’m not stuck in the house all the time.

I’m fairly comfortable with my body, and I’m trying to learn to accept the changes that come with age, but there are always things one would like to change. I must admit to feeling quite anxious about posting this. I learned a lot and very much enjoyed the process of making this picture, but I’m not so sure about sharing the result.

So here I am. I’ve never seen myself as sexless before, but to save frightening people, I am now devoid of genitalia like a male doll.

What I hate about my body:

    1. Ear hairs. What are they for? All I know is the older I get, the thicker they are, and the harder it is to get rid of them. It’s almost impossible to remove them single-handed.
    2. Man boobs.
    3. Body hair even more so where it has gone grey. I’d remove it all if it was practical. I shave, I trim, my vanity knows no bounds.
    4. My weight. I lost 28lbs (12.6kg) last year and want to lose a further 10lbs (4.5kg) this year to hit my ideal weight.

Revisiting these pictures after twelve-odd years is harrowing, enlightening, and often embarrassing. Looking at this severe, stiff person makes me wonder how I lasted as long as I did without flipping out. It also makes me wonder why it took so long for me to realise that the joy had gone out of my life.

And of course, I’ll never grow tired of singing the praises of my little Fuji camera. For a point and shoot, it really did well.

It’s around ten PM and I’ve been working on and off since seven thirty AM.

I took this shot at my desk at home.

  • 6AM and only just awake (365: 17)

This picture was taken as part of a 365 days of me mini challenge to take a picture of yourself straight after waking up. Frightening isn’t it?!

It’s taking a fair bit of digging to discover why I have this picture. It turned out that I’d planned a 365 days picture — but it went wrong. I’ve no idea what the plan was. After I’d taken this, I got another idea for my day’s shot, but it seems that this picture survived anyway.

I had a disastrous evening, not much time and neither of my pre-planned 365 days photographs had worked. In fact, I was feeling quite depressed, and time was running on, when the idea for this shot came to me.

I forgot to white balance the camera and to compensate for the light background in my haste to grab the picture, so a little bit of correction was called for.

I guess I ought to have titled this ‘Myself and My Friend’, or ‘My friend and I’ but the title I used sounded more childlike.

The three most obvious sides of myself:

    1. At work
    2. Out socially
    3. Home

This picture never made it into my 365 Days project because of the crop on the head of the left clone, and the misalignment of the beer bottle. It takes so long to do this I haven’t bothered again (yet). In frustration I deleted all the originals – over 50 shots.

Future Gary says it’s a shame I didn’t keep the originals as with modern post processing and AI I could have fixed it.

I thought it would make a change to take a photograph outside. I’m still too self-conscious to be bold and obvious when doing self-portraits, which is one excuse for the up the nose angle. I really wanted to take a picture in Lou-Lou’s or Waitrose, but both were packed to gunwales.

After weeks of high winds the back garden fence was in need of some TLC. A few screws did the job. It is not easy standing on a ladder holding a drill and taking a picture at the same time.
